What Does a Major Second Sound Like?

The major second is just the beginning of a scale! For example, C–D. You can also describe the major second as a whole step or two half steps.

Ascending Major Seconds:

"Do-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (C–D–E)

"He's a Pirate" from Pirates of the Caribbean (C–D)

Descending Major Second:

"Satin Doll" by Duke Ellington (Opening Melody, A–G)

"Shallow" from A Star is Born by Lady Gaga (Tell Me SOME-THIN' girl, E–D)
