Fun Facts: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

I have several students working on Mozart sonatas right now, but what do you know about him?

1. Mozart had five names.

That's right, Mozart had FIVE names! He was baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, but we don't often call him that. Here's the transformation: the names "Johannes" "Chrysostomus" translate from Latin to German as "Johann" and "Chrysostomos" and are often omitted. "Wolfgangus" becomes "Wolfgang" in German and means one who "walks with wolves." It was also the name of his maternal grandfather. Then, "Theophilus" translates from Greek to German as "Gottlieb" and then to Latin as "Amadeus," which all mean "loved by God." Thus, you arrive at the name we know today: (Johann Chrysostomos) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

2. Mozart liked pets.

Mozart had a variety of animals throughout his life including a horse, canary, starling, and dog!

3. Mozart wrote over 600 pieces!

I'm not quite sure how this is possible, but Mozart wrote over 600 pieces in practically every genre of the time, including symphonies, sonatas, quartets, concerti, and operas!

4. Mozart composed in small intervals throughout the day.

According to Mozart biographers, Mozart composed a couple of hours here and there throughout the day. No wonder he was so productive!!

5. Mozart died at the early age of 35.

Mozart was born in Salzburg Austria on January 27, 1756 and died in Vienna Austria in

December 5, 1791, making him only 35 years old at the time of his death. The exactly cause of his death is unknown. Sadly, he died rather poor and was buried unceremoniously as a commoner.
